Last month, the Liberty City Preservation Project brought GTA 4 as a Mod to GTA 5 and gained mass social media attention.
Posting to their Discord server, one of the project’s creators has said that they’ve decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation Project.
Discord user nkjellman said, “Due to the unexpected attention that our project received and after speaking with Rockstar Games, we have decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation project. We appreciate all the support the project has received, and we look forward to continuing to pursue our passion for modding the Grand Theft Auto series.
World Travel, the modding team behind the mod brought back Liberty City in unprecedented fashion and in one of the most accurate mods of the original game to date. The mod included NPCs, vehicles, sound effects from the original game, and even a fully functioning subway system.
You can see a few social media clips of the mod below:
There’s a new mod on the block for GTAV “Liberty City Preservation Project”, I tried out the mod. It’s AMAZING, it has a working subway network, the police and ambient traffic are faithful and it’s so polished. Amazing work to the team of devs who worked on this!
Tour around Liberty City using the subway and getting to Middle Park in GTAV Liberty City Preservation Project is the best work in the GTA modding community to date, IMO. Excited to see to seeing more from the team looking ahead!
As for where the modding team goes from here, it remains unclear, but for now, fans of the mod are understandably frustrated that Rockstar Games has seemingly influenced its closure. Likely, the studio requested the removal of the mod before any legal action was enforced.
Why Was The Liberty City Project Shut Down
Players have begun to speculate that the move could suggest that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive plan to release an official game remaster soon. Still, as of the time of writing, nothing has been officially announced.
This isn’t the first time that Rockstar Games has shut down or threatened legal action for mods, though, and it likely won’t be the last.
